SO YOU WANT A ... GOLF BOOK TO TREASURE Its title notwithstanding, Golf: The Impossible Collection (Assouline Ultimate Collection) is not impossible to acquire. For $945, this limited edition can be yours, and, with your purchase, terrific glossy fodder for grill room debate. Written by George Peper, the former longtime editor of Golf Magazine, the book is plump with photos and descriptions of 100 bucket-list layouts. But unlike so many compilations that populate the pages of golf publications, it’s not a ranking of the world’s “best” spots to play. It’s an exploration of what Peper depicts as the “most important” courses on the planet, ones that help “define an era or create a destination” or “cause us to stop and reconsider what golf architecture is about — or should be.” The result: a lushly documented journey that crisscrosses continents and generations, from the hallowed Old Course in St. Andrew to Hainan Island, China, home of a modern masterpiece called Shanqin Bay. Along with lovely words and images that illustrate each layout’s uniqueness, Peper enlivens his work with quotes and anecdotes from golf-world luminaries — assorted pearls of wisdom sure to draw a knowing smile from anyone familiar with the game’s bewitching beauty and allure. All this in a luxury case with white-gloss finish. — JOSH SENS
