after members nominated him. Elsewhere, Stephen Vorhees, director of tennis at Canyon Crest Country Club in Riverside, Calif., won the 2017 Head Penn Racquet Sports Pro of the Year Award for Southern California. Spotted at Aliso Viejo Country Club in Aliso Viejo, Calif.: Pat Gillick, National Baseball Hall of Famer; Tommy Lasorda, legendary former L.A. Dodgers manager; A.J. Preller, San Diego Padres general manager; Dave Roberts, Dodgers manager; and Don Welke, Padres vice president of scouting operations. All were on hand in January for a panel discussion about baseball during a private event. Also in January, the Veterans Committee of the City Club of Washington in Washington, D.C., invited three documented Tuskegee Airmen from the aviation organization’s East Coast chapter to an intimate event at the club. Members in attendance watched a screening of the movie Red Tails, then talked and posed for photos with the Tuskegee Airmen guests. THAT WINNING SPIRIT: Sylvia Hatchell, the University of North Carolina Tar Heels women’s basketball coach since 1986 and a member at the Carolina Club in Chapel Hill, N.C., won her 1,000th game this past winter, just the third NCAA Division 1 women’s basketball coach to achieve that many victories. During Hatchell’s career, she has received the National Coach of the Year title twice and taken home five Olympic gold medals as head or assistant coach for USA Basketball. She also led the Tar Heels to a 1994 NCAA championship win. 2018 CLUBCORP TOURNAMENTS April 8-12: ClubCorp Couples Tournament Presented by Oceania at Pinehurst Resort in Pinehurst, N.C. The site over the years for the U.S. Open, PGA Championship, Ryder Cup, and other high-profile pro and amateur events, this 2,000-acre property boasts nine golf courses — most notably the famed Pinehurst No. 2. It will once again host the U.S. Open in 2024. The resort also features three hotels, villas and private condos, a full-service spa, a 24-hour fitness center, and multiple dining venues — from casual to fine dining. What’s new: This summer, the resort unveils a craft brewery and restaurant in a restored 1895-era steam power plant just walking distance away in the adjacent Village of Pinehurst. In the fall, Pinehurst reveals golf course architect Gil Hanse’s Pinehurst No. 4 redesign, complete with sandscape rough and native grasses reminiscent of Donald Ross’ original 1919 design. Late last year, the resort opened a new nine-hole, 789-yard, Hanse-designed short course named the Cradle, with holes ranging from 56 yards to 127 yards. Hanse also redesigned the recently reopened 18-hole Thistle Dhu putting course, expanding it by nearly four times. Information: Deal: Receive discounted rates on standard resort packages, based on availability. Members with Signature Gold Unlimited and O.N.E. benefits receive two cart-fee rounds of golf per month on Pinehurst No. 9 and discounts on select spa services.
